Can a long windshield crack be repaired?

Short answer

Often, yes. The “longer than a dollar bill (six inches) means replace” rule is a shop policy, not a limit of the glass. Many cracks well past six inches, including 12-inch cracks, can be filled and sealed. What decides it is how old the crack is, whether dirt has gotten inside, where it runs, and whether it’s still growing.

Where the six-inch rule comes from

Many glass shops and insurance claim lines use six inches as the cut-off between repair and replacement. It’s simple to explain over the phone, and it sends a lot of cracks toward replacement, which is the bigger sale.

The glass itself doesn’t change at six inches. A seven-inch crack and a five-inch crack are the same kind of damage; one is just longer. With the right tools and resin, the length that can be repaired depends far more on the condition of the crack than on a ruler.

What actually decides it

Age and dirt. A fresh crack is clean inside. Over weeks, dust, water and car-wash soap work into it and block the resin. The sooner it’s repaired, the better it bonds and the better it looks.
Where it starts. Most long cracks start at the edge of the glass, in the outer two inches where the windshield carries the most stress. These edge cracks are very common and often repairable.
Where it runs. A repaired crack leaves a thin line. If it crosses right in front of the driver’s eyes, we’ll tell you honestly how it will look before starting.
Whether it’s still moving. A crack that grows every day needs attention quickly. Once it’s stopped and filled, it stays put.
How many cracks there are. One long crack is a repair job. A windshield with several cracks branching into each other is a different story.

How a long crack is repaired

First the end of the crack is stopped so it can’t run any further. Then the glass is gently flexed open with a crack opener while resin is fed into the crack from one end to the other, so it fills the full depth, not just the surface. The resin is cured with UV light section by section, and the surface is finished smooth.

A long crack repair usually takes under an hour, and you can drive right after.

What it will look like afterwards

A repaired crack doesn’t disappear. You’ll usually see a faint line, much less visible than before, and the crack is sealed so dirt and water can’t get in and it won’t keep spreading.
